Traveling and sleeping in your everyday vehicle (minivan, SUV or pickup) equipped with a Roadloft conversion kit doesn’t mean you have to give up your hygiene. There are public toilets all over the road. And for emergencies, we use a portable toilet in our minivan, a proven and clean solution.
For the shower, a whole series of options are available to you. Even if you sleep for free in nature or incognito in the city.
Even if you’re not camping there, if you ask nicely at reception, most campsites will charge you between $2 and $5 to use their facilities. You can even wash your clothes at the same time!
A portable shower is a great option for adventures far from the cities. All you need is enough water and no fear of cold showers. There are several options available: with or without electricity, with a foot pump, or gravity-powered. There’s something for everyone.
We recommend NatureHike’s portable shower for its ergonomic nozzle and pressurized foot pump. It’s a very useful accessory to have on road trips!
Most cities or town have a community or sports center. In addition to shower access, entry usually gives you access to sports facilities. You can combine business with pleasure!
In addition to swimming a few laps or relaxing by the pool, you can take advantage of the showers.
All across the U.S., especially along highways, you’ll find Truck Stops—multi-service centers primarily for long-haul truckers but also open to everyone. For just a few dollars, you can access impeccably clean showers, complete with towels, shampoo, and soap. Just keep an eye out for chains like Flying J or Love’s along the road, or do a quick search on your phone.
Do you often travel to cities? Sports centers with branches across the country may be a good option. They’re often open 24 hours a day, so not only can you train there, but you’ll also have access to showers.
When traveling along the coast, marinas or public beach showers can be a great option. In fact, it was during a trip to Prince Edward Island that we first discovered public showers along the beaches. Marinas often even have laundry facilities available!
Hostels are generally open and relaxed places. In exchange for a smile and a few dollars, a friendly roadtripper will often be given access to the showers.
There too, a friendly smile or a few dollars can often grant you access to the showers.

Showering on the road has never been easier than it is today. Let’s remember that the pioneers of road-tripping in the ’70s had neither toilets nor showers in their Westfalias. They also didn’t have apps to locate all the spots mentioned in this article. And yet, just mentioning that era and the name of this iconic travel solution still sparks dreams!
With Roadloft, vanlife has never been easier. We offer conversion kits that turn your everyday vehicle into a mobile refuge in just a few minutes.
