Unless you’re constantly plugged into a power source (such as a campground or home) or keep your vehicle running all night, it’s practically impossible to use an AC unite in a camper.
Here’s why: cooling a truck bed requires a portable AC unit with at least 6,000 BTU, which uses about 850 watts. Running this for one night would consume around 6,800 watt-hours, which would require six 100Ah 12V batteries. This setup would cost at least $3,100, and even then, the batteries would be completely drained after a single night.
Vanlife is all about freedom and affordable travel, so instead of relying on AC, here are five tips to keep your truck camper cool without the need for air conditioning.
One of the simplest ways to manage heat in truck camper cool is to park in the shade whenever possible. Look for trees or structures that can provide cover from the sun. This will help reduce the heat that builds up inside your truck camper, making it a more comfortable space to relax after a day of exploring.
If there’s no natural shade for your vehicle, an awning can create a cool, shaded spot for you to relax. If you don’t have one, a mosquito net shelter can also do the trick, offering both shade and ventilation.
Installing reflective insulation, such as a heatshield, can dramatically lower the temperature inside your truck camper. This material reflects sunlight away, preventing it from penetrating the interior and keeping your living space cooler.
Proper ventilation is key to maintaining a cool environment. Installing a fan on the ceiling of the truck bed is a game-changer, as it effectively expels heat from the top. By opening the windows already integrated into the leisure cap of the truck, it creates a natural flow of air that keeps the space cool. We have been using the Maxx Air 00-03810B fan, which uses very little energy, 6W/h to be exact. What’s impressive is its 200 CFM (cubic feet per minute) power, which allows it to move a significant volume of air. Given the truck bed’s dimensions—6’L x 5’W x 4’H—this gives us 120 cubic feet of space. This means that the air inside is completely refreshed about twice every minute (1.67 times, to be exact). In our experience, even during a heatwave with the sun beating down on a black truck bed, the interior temperature remained the same as the outside, providing optimal comfort with minimal energy consumption.
Another simple solution is using portable fans to boost airflow inside your truck bed unit. This easy hack can greatly improve your comfort while you sleep, making a noticeable difference on those hot summer nights!
For a cooler and more comfortable night’s sleep, opt for a forested destination or head to the woods rather than staying in a desert or urban area. Trees naturally lower the temperature, providing a refreshing environment for rest.
Switching to LED lights, can help keep your truck camper cool. Unlike traditional bulbs, which emit a lot of heat, LED lights produce minimal heat while still providing bright illumination. This small change can contribute to a cooler interior.
Summer is often the most convenient season for travel because of work and school vacations. However, if you have the flexibility to travel during other seasons, we highly recommend it! Not only will you avoid the crowds, but you’ll also get to enjoy beautiful scenery, like vibrant fall colors or serene winter landscapes.
